8 Kim Snoy BFA: Marble Sculptures

8 Snoy, Suspended, Marbles on wood and styrofoam, 14"x14"x15", Sculpture 1, 2014

This project was called skin and bones. The bones are the wood and the styrofoam. The skin is the marbles. During the critique I noticed there was an interesting shadow on the wood from the overhead lights shinning through the marbles. When I saw the marbles shadows, it made me wonder what would happen if my project was centered around light shinning through the marbles. This led me to my final project which is shown below.

8 Snoy, Lights, Marbles on wood - LED lights- cork board, 11"x12"x11", Sculpture 1, 2014

During the semester we were asked to do a presentation on an artist. I chose Dan Flavin because I loved the use of color in his sculptures. He is famous for creating sculptural objects and installations with fluorescent lights. In one of his works he lit up the outside of a building with colorful lights. I created a structure that would allow me to put marbles in between layers so light could shine through. I feel this project was successful because I created interesting shadows which is what my main goal was.
